The purpose of the Foothills Astronomical Society (FAS) is to bring together people with a mutual interest in astronomy and space exploration and to further their knowledge and enjoyment of the subject. The goal of the FAS is to promote the knowledge of astronomy in the surrounding community.

Membership consist of people who enjoy astronomy as a hobby and range from the casual observer to the more advanced amateurs who will gladly share helpful tips and techniques in locating those elusive deep sky objects.

Programs at monthly meetings are informative but are presented in an entertaining manner. Often these programs utilize slides and videos to enhance the presentation. The programs are very informal and members are encouraged to give presentations in areas of their particular interest or experience.

The FAS has access to a 13-inch Dobsonian telescope. In addition, many members own their own telescopes of various sizes and are more than willing to share their telescopes with other members during observing sessions.

The FAS sponsors several Star Watches at varous times during the year. These Star Watches are open to the general public free of charge. There are also several "members only" Star Watches scheduled that enable members to delve deep into the night sky. The FAS will also be glad to schedule special observing sessions for schools, church groups, youth groups, or any other organization that wishes us to do so.

Guests and visitors are always welcome. Meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. on the third Friday of each month at the Philadelphia Presbyterian Church in Landrum (see map below). Business and upcoming events as well as current astronomical news is discussed prior to the program.

Refreshments follow each meeting as does a brief get together that enables members, guests and visitors to talk together and share experiences.

Come visit the FAS. You do not need to own a telescope to enjoy the beauty of the universe, but if you wish to learn more about astronomy, then the FAS is just what you are looking for.
